Karni Fort
HeritageThe vision that the land of the Ranas (the Sisodia Rajputs of Chittorgarh- Udaipur) invokes in most is one of stubborn and herioc resistance to invasion against impossible odds, blood curdling acts of supreme sacrifice and a tradition of chivalary never to recur.
Equally, the names of their heros Rana Sangha, who led the last confederation of Rajputs against the Mughal Babar (16th C) and legendary Rana Pratap, whose entire life passed in conflict with Akbar the Great conjure up visions of invading armies, elephant and canon, emaciating seiges, mass immolations, glorious battle, hey-days of the sword and horse and awesome impregnable medieval Fortresses, poised atop outcrops of the Aravalli Hills. In this historic blood-soaked country side amidst the Pool Night rolling hills ravines and passes of the Aravalli lies the delicate fortress of Bambora an important Sisodia outpost, strategically placed not too distant from the mother of Udaipur State's fortresses- Chittorgarh (stronghold of the Sisodias until its annihilation in the 16th C at the hands of Akbar) and the new capital at Udaipur also a drum-beat away from Bambora. It was in the early 18th Century, when the Mughal Aurangzeb's reign had passed, that Maharana Sangram II, Ruler of Udaipur, took issue with the Mughals, leading to a battle (14th April, 1711) that the Sisodias fought valiantly and victoriously at Banghanware near the banks of River Khari, At his side, into battle, the Maharana had young Sanwant Singh of Salumber.
Pleased with his daring and constancy the Maharana granted Sanwant Singh a sizable fiefdom that very day along with the handsome Fort of Bambora. It is today available to the discerning and adventurous traveller, to share in its past and partake of its present- the epitome of Rajput hospitality, princely comforts and a nobleman's cuisine. The fort has been sensitively restored to retain its ambience and yet offer modern conveniences. Of great interest is the whole process of conversation and restoration which the owners, Thakur Sunder Singh, his wife Thakurani Chanda Kanwar of Sodawas (Marwar- Jodhpur) and their Aristrocratic family, took up this challenging task, of converting this majestic Fort into an immaculate Heritage ResortKarni Fort, Udaipur Reservation Form
